Gloomy Sunday Afternoon Brain Teaser

A friend of mine posed this question to me in a recent e-mail. I didn't know the answer, and had to ask her in the end.
I wonder if any of you clever people out there that can work it out.
Question
There is a common English word that is nine letters long. Each time you remove a letter from it, it still remains an English word - from nine letters right down to a single letter.
What is the original word, and what are the words that it becomes after removing one letter at a time?
Clue - the original word starts with S and ends with g
I'll give you the answer later in the comments.
(How bored am I?)

i've seen this one, but can't remember the word. it's something like "slipping" and then you drop a letter from each side, but each time you drop the letter you get a new word, until all you have left is the letter i, but i can't remember what the word is.
